chassis

Lightweight structures and fiber composite materials: The chassis module develops and produces the load-bearing components of our racing car.

Who are we?

The Chassis module at Lions Racing covers a broad range of tasks and skills. Teamwork is essential in both development and manufacturing. If you are interested in lightweight structures and composite materials, this is the right place to start. The module also offers many beginner-friendly entry tasks.

Core competencies and tasks

A key component we build is the monocoque. It is manufactured in sandwich construction using fiber-reinforced composites with an aluminum honeycomb core and autoclave processing.

Beyond composites, we also work with metals such as steel for the main hoop and aluminum for the front hoop. Another major responsibility is driver safety, including the impact attenuator and firewall between driver and HV system.

In addition to these central tasks, the module includes many other exciting responsibilities. Every contribution helps ensure the car is ready for competition on time.

What do we do and where can you get involved?

Development

Every year we improve our components. This requires early concept work, evaluation of multiple approaches, and validation through tests and simulations.

Testing

To validate our ideas, we run various tests. A frequent focus is comparative testing between steel and composite materials. The more we test, the better we understand behavior under different loads.

Design

After concepts and validation, components are designed in CAD (Siemens NX). During design, we continuously iterate with simulation and testing to achieve optimized parts.

Manufacturing

Our manufacturing work is strongly focused on composites. The monocoque process is one of the most demanding and exciting tasks. Other composite parts are also highly interesting, as each component may require different materials and manufacturing methods.
